Paul Knott, CPA|PFS|CFP

As Managing Member, Paul specializes in providing client-centered comprehensive financial advice to individuals, families and their businesses with a focus on optimizing their unique tax situations.  Paul’s years of experience as a Certified Public Accountant along with certifications in financial planning (PFS, CFP) provide his clients with a unique source of guidance by combining tax, investment and insurance guidance within one firm.

Prior to Knott, Richartz & Co, CPA’s, PLLC and founding Old North State Wealth Management, Paul worked in the public practice of accounting with a focus on tax compliance.  His career also provided direct exposure to the investment industry while he served as a Vice President and Financial Advisor with Smith Barney.  Paul is currently a member and has served as past president of both the Cape Fear Chapter of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants and the New Hanover County Estate Planning Council. He is also the past Chair of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Institute for Tax and Investment Planning.  Currently he is serving as a Board member of the Investor’s Roundtable.

Paul and June Knott have been married since 1995 and have two boys.  The family enjoys running the various 5K races held locally, participating in Boy Scout activities and rooting for UNCW’s basketball and N.C. State’s basketball and football teams.

Paul received a B.S.B.A, Accountancy degree from the Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.  His licenses include the Series 7, 63, 65,  Life and Long-Term Care insurance.  His North Carolina CPA license number is 23755.

Doug Thornton, CPA

Douglas E. Thornton, CPA joined the firm in 2016 and brings over 30 years of experience as a CPA.  Doug is a graduate of East Carolina University where he received a B.S.B.A. degree and was licensed as a CPA by the State of North Carolina in 1985 (license number 15135). He is also a member of the North Carolina Association of CPAs and the American Institute of CPAs.

Doug has many years of experience assisting a variety of businesses with accounting and income tax advice. Doug also has extensive experience working with high income and high net worth individuals in assisting them with income tax planning and compliance.

Doug has served on various committees at his church including the audit committee and fiscal affairs committee.  He also enjoys volunteering at First Fruit Ministries.

Charles Buckland, CPA

Charles R. Buckland  joined the firm in 2013, bringing over 20 years of experience in auditing and accounting. He has worked for both Coopers & Lybrand in Johannesburg, South Africa as an auditor for 9 years and Ernst & Young in Cambridge, UK in the corporate tax department. He is committed to providing client satisfaction through the delivery of accounting and tax preparation for professionals and business owners.

Charles is a member of The North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (license no. 36029). He is a member of the UK Association of Tax Technicians. Charles obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree with Honors in Accounting Science in 1992 in South Africa and is a South African Chartered Accountant.

Charles has lived in Wilmington since 2004 and is a US Citizen. He was born in South Africa and lived in the UK for 5 years before moving to Wilmington. He serves on the finance committee of Cape Fear Country Club and as treasurer for Wilmington South Rotary Branch. He is also an avid marathon runner, having completed over 50 marathons including the Boston Marathon.

Emma Strickland, CPA

Emma received a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She began her professional career as a district court mediator and peer mediation coordinator for youth. She then dedicated her time to raising her two children while working from home before beginning her career in accounting.

Emma began her public accounting career with Randy W. Richartz, CPA in 2009 where she served as both office manager and staff accounting assisting. Since then she has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of forensic accounting, tax controversy resolution and accounting practice management. . She coordinates the tax return preparation for the firm.

Emma is a member of The North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (license no. 44701).

 

Susan Brown, Office Manager

Susan H. Brown holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Home Economics in Education and Business with a concentration in Business and Community Services from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She is a proud Wilmington native and graduate of John T. Hoggard High School.  Susan enjoys her position of being the first point of contact to our clients in need of specialized financial/investment expert advice.

Randy Richartz, CPA (Retired)

Randy W. Richartz has been a CPA since 1982 and is licensed in North Carolina (license number 29678) and New Jersey (license number 11487). He is a member of the North Carolina Association of CPAs where he has served three terms as President of the Cape Fear Chapter. Mr. Richartz was also an Associate member of the Central Carolina Chapter of Certified Fraud Examiners. He has served on the Accounting Advisory Committee of Cape Fear Community College since 2006 and has been reappointed for the term 2016 – 2019.
